BigRed goes German

October 26, 2005 02:01PM - BigRed goes German

Well BigRed had a good life, what can I say?!

Its not really been a lack of news since I last updated, its simply a lot of news that hasn't been posted. Since I have took on the roll of co-driver for 40/40 Racing I wasn't driving in this years Colorado COG Rally. Big Red was instead loned to Mitch, from Checkpoint Racing, because the Focus he was planning to race tangled with the front of a trailer and lost. With only 18 hours before we were supposed to head to Steamboat Springs we decided to swap the new engine that was waiting to be put in Big Red. After only 6 hours Big Red was purring and we packed up.

Not only was Mitch driving a borrowed race car, however, Brooks Freehill and myself were also racing a borrowed car. A bit of a powerplant upgrade ended badly when the turbo took itself apart after testing. With no time to get a new one, Brooks aquired the dubbed 'clown car' and we were ready to race.

The race went well for the first half of the day for both 40/40 and Checkpoint Racing, although Mitch ended his day early when he rolled Big Red on stage 6. Luckily Mitch and his co-driver, AJ, weren't hurt, however, Big Red suffered serious body damage. Freehill and myself took it fairly easy the first day with only one semi-minor scare, finishing first in Group 5. ...[Because we were the only car entered in the class.]

For the most part Big Red's drive-train, suspension, and rollcage were intact, but the body damage was just too much. After an evaluation from our good friends at Wreckmasters in Colorado Springs, it was decided that a car they had for sale was a better replacement rather then preping a entirely new Civic shell to replace Big Red.

Big Red Racing is now dawning a 1990 BMW 325i Coupe, dubbed BR2. Its got the spirit that the origional Big Red had with a few differences. The 325 is rear wheel drive and boasts a 2.5 liter in-line 6 cylinder, generating a (currently) stock 200hp.

Co-driver Kurt Terry and I recently took BR2 to the SCCA National RalyCross Challenge for little 'test drive' and found out what we needed to improve to make it a bomber rally car. We also found out how much of a blast it is to drive. The car is already base preped for rally with a rollcage, paint and skidplates.

Look for some pictures, specs and a project list soon.
