It has been an interesting year so far. We haven't made it to too many races, as its mainly been a year for finding the bugs. We've developed quite the list of items that need to be upgraded and changed since we first got the BMW.
Our latest race was in Victor, Colorado on July 22nd and 23rd. We had a successful practice day and were able to trim down on our time throughout the day. On race day we dropped a little more time on our first run and were excited to see what we could do with that last one. After adding a little more octane to help the BMW's power at high altitude, we were ready to go. We have been struggling with some throttle lag for a couple months, although not seeing any error codes in the BMW's computer.
Our second run was going very well and we had been carrying more speed throughout every corner and had finally mastered one of the more difficult ones. About 30 feet from the finish on the last corner things went completely wrong. Catching a bit too much of the inside of the corner I thought we might had destroyed a wheel, however the car quickly lifted up and we found ourselves rolling onto the roof. Luckily the car was still running when we were upside down and beyond a damaged windshield, door and fender things were okay.
We were allowed to drive the car down the hill back to the pits to load it on the trailer. Driving it confirmed our belief that it was only minor damage to the exterior and the drive train was intact.
Big Red II is now taking a rest at Wreckmasters in Colorado Springs. We're currently planning to compete in the last hill climb of the season back in Victor, Colorado. Beyond that; check back soon.
